A frame tiny house

One of the things about tiny houses is that they usually have very simple lines. This is possibly most true of an A-frame tiny house, which basically has two walls and a roof. These are not the most common design of tiny houses you’ll see, but they design is certainly one to consider.

Advantages and disadvantages of an A frame tiny house

Like any house, an A-frame has advantages and disadvantages. Some of these are exaggerated a bit when it comes to the characteristic design of the A-frame.

Advantages

One of the greatest advantages of an A-frame tiny house is that the slope of the roof won’t allow any rain to pool on it and certainly very little snow will be able to cling to the steep slope. This makes this style of house particularly suited to areas that have snowy winters.

The upper angles of an A-frame house usually have big windows that allow in a lot of natural light. If there are additional windows in the steep roof sides of your A-frame tiny house, the light will be increased.

An A-frame tiny house is relatively more affordable. If you think about it, with the two sides of the roof coming so low to the ground, you are reducing the side walls. This means reducing the amount of the building material you use overall, which brings down costs.

The design of an A-frame house is actually very simple, making them one of the easiest tiny houses to design.

Disadvantages

One of the major disadvantages of an A-frame tiny house is that you lose out on interior storage space. The steep angle of the roof means the side walls are at an angle. At the very least, you’ll need to be innovative in the way you design these spaces.

You will have to find a truly efficient way of warming your A-frame tiny home in winter. Most of the heat rises into the high, steep top of the ‘A’, leaving the rest of the house much cooler.

An A-frame is an A-frame. The basic design of the house cannot change, so your A-frame tiny house will look like any other. You can be innovative and add windows and some features, but the basic design will remain.

Can you build your own A-frame tiny house?

Building your own tiny house is an option open, depending on your ability and the resources available to you.

One option you have is to use a pre-existing kit that you put together. This has the advantage of having all the elements of the home already cut to size. Also, there are instructions for assembling the pieces, so the process should be quite straightforward.

One of these kit houses, the MADI Flatpack Modular A-Frame is particularly innovative, as it comes as a flat pack. The elements literally need to be pulled up and the house unfolds.

Perhaps putting a kit A-frame tiny house together is not quite what you consider to be building your own home. In that case, you do have the option to begin at the beginning and build your own house from the start. In this case, you can buy pre-drawn plans for existing designs and set out on the build yourself.
