Thanks to the legions of Instagram couples and bloggers popularizing #vanlife, camper vans have skyrocketed in popularity in the past several years. Some luxurious campervans cost upwards of $200,000, and even the modestly-priced vehicles commonly reach the $100,000 level.
However, these brand-new vehicles aren’t the only small camper vans for sale. You’ll also routinely find campervans for sale from people who built their own traveling home and have decided to upgrade to another vehicle or who have put away their traveling shoes for the moment and have decided to sell their vehicle.
The best camper van for you will always be the vehicle that best meets your needs and traveling goals.
You’ll find that there’s a camper van out there for each of these needs and that they’re available at all price points, from $200,000 Mercedes vans with all the luxuries of home to 1990s Astro vans with homemade interiors and basic furnishings.
The cost of your camper van starts with the type of vehicle you select and the quality of the furnishings and options in the vehicle. For a basic setup without any running water, a cassette toilet, a solar setup, and a bed, you can get away with buying an old van for a few thousand dollars and spending about $3,000 on the contents. With your own hard work, you can make a serviceable camper van for way less than $10,000.
However, there are also legions of options out there of readymade vans, from companies that specialize in Class B campervans to used campervans built by someone else and that are ready to pass into someone else’s hands. You can often score a very basic campervan for less than $10,000, but a professionally manufactured camper will usually cost at least $20,000 for used and to the moon when new and luxurious.
If you’re looking for legitimate plumbing in your campervan, the smallest professionally manufactured camper van is probably the Airstream Interstate, which is less than 20 feet long. The Carado Banff Class B campervan is only a few inches bigger and also has plumbing. Winnebago makes a van that’s under 20 feet and has indoor plumbing, and you can also get an OGA van with plumbing with the added bonus of eco-friendly building materials.
You can also, technically, create a campervan of your very own with a cassette toilet, or you can roll up your sleeves and create a plumbing system in your van with some basic knowledge. Ford Econoline vehicles are very popular for van conversion projects, but you could even get away with something as small as a Honda Odyssey or an Astro van.
